PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Many  people who are elderly or disabled aren’t able to get out of their houses.  They depend on the kindness of others.  3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl has more on how one program is helping.

Through the snow and in the frigid temperatures, Vincent Sample doesn’t let the weather get in his way.  He’s a volunteer with Aid For Friends, and he has an important delivery.

Vincent is bringing food to 59-year-old Richard Hopkins, who’s disabled after having two strokes.  He is partially paralyzed and depends on a wheelchair.  Getting out normally is difficult, but in this arctic blast it’s impossible.  So these groceries are a lifesaver.

“This will come in handy for this type of weather.  Other than that, getting to the market is really hard,” said Richard.

“This kind of weather is really tough, trying to get out,” said Vincent.  But he says there’s a tremendous need.  So Vincent isn’t letting some bad weather get in his way.

Aid For Friends delivers free meals to home bound people in the five county Philadelphia region.

“They really don’t have anyone that’s really going to make the valid effort to get out to them during this inclement weather,” said Vincent.

In addition to the food, there’s a friendly visit to make sure things are okay, to let those in need know people care.

“A lot of our client friends solely depend on us,” said Vincent.

“I really appreciate it,” said Richard.

In addition to food donations, Aid For Friends also needs portable space heaters.

Remember in this weather, it’s especially important to check in on elderly and handicapped neighbors and friends.
