Childhood Trauma A Predictor Of Adult Disease

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is not something that is talked about very often because it is often a source of embarrassment...although undeserved embarrassment for its victims but, according to a recent study, one in four women and one in six males have experienced sexual trauma before the age of 18.

Yet, according to the American Family Physician journal, of the estimated 22 percent of women who were victims of past trauma, only three percent of them ever revealed this to their primary care doctor.

However, perhaps the most disturbing aspect is that the more trauma in childhood, the greater the chances of a chronic disease in adulthood.
