Thankful For November Blooms
By Phran Novelli
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - By the time we've had a few freezing nights, with autumn drawing to a close, you expect the garden to be basically brown. Barren. Done for the season. So it's particularly entertaining to see how some things are still blooming. The occasional azalea blossom that pops up out of place; a few forsythia flowers here and there; and roses in particular have been not just hanging on, but really pumping out a parade of posies since September. While roses do bloom beautifully in early summer, lots of them also rebloom again in the fall, and the newer shrub roses have been very prolific this year.
But even though I know they can and do keep blooming...it's still impressive. And I'm still very thankful to be standing in the garden on a cold November day wearing a hat and mittens and seeing the surprising sight of shocking pink roses against the backdrop of dead, drooping hydrangea leaves and other shrubbery that's given up on being pretty for this year.
