Cold Temps Throughout Region Don't Keep Everyone Indoors

By Mike Dougherty

BURLINGTON COUNTY, N.J. (CBS) - In case you haven't noticed, it's cold outside!

Temperatures struggled to climb out of the 20s, and several cities in the region -- including Philadelphia -- are under a code blue until Monday afternoon. The frigid temps, however, didn't keep everyone inside.

At times on Sunday, the date on the calendar matched the number on the thermometer and even the wind speed -- all were 24.

That's no big deal for the guys of the South Jersey Masters 35 and over soccer league:

"Once you start knocking the ball around, you really don't notice it too much," Dan Bell said.

Bell says calling out "sick" was never even a thought:

"Then you'd be 'the guy.' And then you'd have to hear about it for the rest of the season. You were 'the guy.' Can't be 'the guy'."

Pete Hatton is 73 years young and the most senior member of the league. He says he hasn't missed a Sunday game since 1961, so there's no way a little cold was going to end his streak:

"No, it's not freezing when you're playing. Just a little windy that's all."

And Pete hasn't come all this way without a few tricks up his sleeve...or in his boots.

"Believe it or not, I got Wawa bags on. That's the secret. Keeps your feet warm. Sure does," he said.

If only he could come up for a solution to keep the ball warm, because it looked like they were kicking around a bowling ball out there.
