ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) — A suspect is in critical condition and a police canine unit was hurt after a police chase and shooting in Atlantic County.

It happened in a marshy area off the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township.

Egg Harbor Township Police were pursuing the suspect, identified as Donald Capriotti, to serve him a warrant when the Capriotti fled from police in his vehicle along the Atlantic City Expressway.

The police were later able to locate his car in the area of the Travel Lodge located on 7000 block of Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City. Capriotti then jumped out of his vehicle and ran into thick marsh.  A police canine, named Shooter, followed Capriotti into the marsh and gunshots were heard in the area.

The suspect was shot multiple times but it is unclear who fired the gun.

The suspect was taken to AtlantiCare in Atlantic City and is reportedly in critical condition.

The police canine, Shooter, was also shot and wounded in the incident. He had surgery to treat his injuries.

Shooter is showing positive signs of recovery.

Authorities tell Eyewitness News that Capriotti previously served a prison sentence for manslaughter and he and his wife were arrested this past summer on drug and gun charges.
