Fired Because Of Your Spouse's Behavior

By Amy E. Feldman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Can you get fired for your spouse's bad behavior at your company's holiday party?

How do you embarrass me. Let me count the ways. Ok, it's four. That is, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article that talks about the ways spouses embarrass one another including when you are embarrassed for him (like when he trips), when he behaves badly (yells at the waitress for example), when he does something you are embarrassed by but he isn't (like dancing badly), and when he directly insults you.

And then there's the biggest problem: whenever what he does to embarrass you happens at your company's holiday party.

Can you be not just embarrassed but actually fired for his bad behavior? The answer is yes.

There have been numerous terminations based on what a spouse has said, done, or groped at a company's holiday party. The fact that you are not the one who got into a fistfight in the parking lot doesn't mean your company has to put up with someone who marries a jerk who gets into a fistfight in the parking lot.

So remind your spouse before the holiday party that his gift depends on your paycheck.
