PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Police say a man shot at least eight times following a robbery attempt in Philadelphia’s LOVE Park has died.
The incident began at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when the victim and several of his friends were taking photos in the landmark park.
Investigators say two suspects approached the group, pulled out a gun and announced a robbery.
“The victim and his friends began to run away and they ran into the stairwell at 15th and JFK when the perpetrators followed our victim into the stairwell and we know that at least eight shots were fired from a large caliber, semi-automatic handgun,” Chief Inspector Scott Small explained.
The victim was rushed by police to Hahnemann University Hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. Police say he died at 1:30 p.m.
The suspects ran away after the shooting and remain on the loose.
It was not immediately known if the victim and his friends were tourists or if they were from the Philadelphia area.
“At this time, I don’t know where the victim or the witnesses are from, but we do know based on witness statements that they were in LOVE Park just taking photographs when they were approached by the two perpetrators,” said Chief Inspector Small.
Detectives intend to review surveillance footage in the area to aid in their investigation.
