UPDATE: Possible Ordnance Removed, Determined To Be A Battery

By Steve Beck, Ileana Diaz

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- An entire block was evacuated and a school was placed on lockdown after the discovery of a suspicious device in Delaware Thursday morning. After an investigation by the Wilmington Department of Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) the device was determined to be an old battery.

A public works crew was digging at about 10 a.m. in the 500 block of Barrett Street in Wilmington when the discovery was made.

As a precaution, the entire 500 block of Barrett Street was evacuated and the bomb squad was called to the scene. The evacuation order has since been lifted and residents have returned to their homes.

Harlan Elementary School was placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure, but the school was safe and was not evacuated. The school operated on a normal dismissal time.

The investigation has concluded.
