By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A sci-fi sequel ruled at the box office on a slow weekend at multiplexes.
The futuristic action thriller, Riddick, a threequel starring Vin Diesel was the weekend's only new mainstream release.
It earned an estimated $19-million, easily good enough for a first-place finish on its debut weekend.
The holdover hit, Lee Daniels' The Butler, was the runner-up with $9-million.
The Spanish-language comedy, Instructions Not Included, was third with $8-million.
In fourth was the hit comedy, we're the Millers, with just under $8-million, and Disney's animated Planes was fifth with $4-million.
Overall, industry-wide totals were modest, as expected at this time of year, but they were still an improvement over those of a year ago.
