PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia’s Fire Fighters’ and Paramedics’ Union held its annual firefighter appreciation day Sunday at the Local 22 Union Hall.

Throughout the day, they honored and recognized fire fighters who have went above and beyond the call of duty on and off the job.

Awards went to firefighters for their outstanding work in and around Philadelphia. They went to those who showed heroism.

“The things they do in their community are worth recognition you can see the fulfillment in them and the honor that their families see ,” Local 22 president Joe Schulle said.

Schulle says for the first time they presented the lifetime achievement award:

“We’re honoring the surviving members of Engine 11, a segregated firehouse until 1952.”

They also took time to recognize firefighters who died in the line of duty.
