Massive Syrup Spill Closes Western Pa. Highway

LIGONIER, Pa. (AP) — A truck driver was hurt and hundreds of gallons of sticky, cherry-lime flavored drink syrup spilled, after his tractor-trailer overturned on a sharp curve near the bottom of a steep stretch of highway in western Pennsylvania.

Ligonier Township police have yet to release the name of the driver or the truck company involved, though Westmoreland County emergency officials believe a Newark, N.J. firm will have to pay for Tuesday evening's cleanup.

The truck was westbound on U.S. Route 30 in Ligonier Township when it rolled over about 6 p.m., spilling at least 23 55-gallon drums of the syrup on the highway. Crews couldn't hose it off for fear it might foul a nearby creek, so crews were working to soak it up.

The extent of the driver's injuries wasn't immediately clear Wednesday.
