LOWER GWYNEDD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) – Police in Montgomery County are looking for a thief who stole money from a weekend wedding.
The incident happened at the William Penn Inn in Lower Gwynedd on Saturday after the couple’s wedding.
Police say the thief stole wedding cards containing checks from a car that was being loaded following the reception.
Jillian Bowie, sister of the groom and bridesmaid, was loading gifts into the car after her brother’s wedding reception when she noticed something missing.
“I took the box with the checks and the cash in it and I put it in the back seat, closed the door, walked back in, got another round of gifts and came out and it was gone. This happened within a minute,” she said.
Inside the box were all of the bride and groom’s cards filled with money and checks.
“I was in shock to be honest. Because I also work at a country club on the weekends and I do this all the time. I load the gifts into the car and this has never, ever happened to me,” she said.
Surveillance video shows a man lurking in the parking lot lobby and even inside the reception. Everybody thought he worked there or maybe belonged to the other side’s family.
“He wasn’t dressed for a wedding. He’s wearing a green t-shirt and brown cargo shorts,” said Chief Paul Kenny of Lower Gwynedd Police Department.
Now police say he’s the guy they want to talk to and they believe he may have been driving this car.
“He was in the restaurant in the reception area for hours, in and out the door. He actually walked into the reception room at one point,” said Kenny.
“I did see this guy walking around at one point, but I didn’t really think much of it and then when I saw him in the surveillance, I thought oh my gosh, I do remember seeing him,” said Bowie.
The bride and groom had to call 100 guests and tell them to put a hold on checks.
It’s unknown how much money was inside the stolen cards, but police are hoping surveillance video will help them catch the suspect.
“We’re guessing anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000. It’s just a ballpark. I personally think it’s more,” said Bowie.
The family says that despite all of this, the bride and groom are enjoying their honeymoon.
