PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Still a box office monster, Monsters University managed to scare up another first-place finish.
The animated prequel earned an estimated $46-million on its second weekend of release.
In second and not too far behind was the debuting female buddy-cop comedy, The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which boasted an opening weekend total of $40-million.
Third place went to the holdover horror thriller, World War Z, which totaled $30-million.
The weekend’s other new mainstream attraction, White House Down, the presidential thriller with Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, finished fourth with $26-million.
And rounding out the top five was Man of Steel with $21-million.
Overall, although industry-wide totals were slightly down compared to a year ago, five titles surpassed the $20-million mark, something that had not happened this year.
