Buono Finds Issue That May Improve Her Poll Numbers In NJ

By David Madden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - While New Jersey State Senator Barbara Buono trails Governor Chris Christie, by a lot, in her bid to unseat him, she may have latched to an issue that might help improve some of those poll numbers.

It started when Buono's daughter announced she has a stake in the November election as what she called a "gay American."

Her mother supports gay marriage, but Christie doesn't.

Then the US Supreme Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act, energizing efforts in New Jersey to get gay marriage approved in the courts.

Buono addressed a rally in Trenton and took her opponent to task.

"He is spineless when it comes to protecting the rights of the people of New Jersey and I support LAMBDA in their quest to make sure that New Jersey's Governor and the New Jersey Legislature and the New Jersey Courts do the right thing," she said.

Christie has vetoed a gay marriage bill, but has often said he'd support putting the question to voters in the form of a constitutional amendment.
