HAMILTON, N.J. (CBS) – Officials say a father was killed, and his young daughter is in extremely critical condition, after a car crash in Mercer County early Sunday morning.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in Hamilton, New Jersey.

Police say the victim, 28-year-old Jorge Deleon, was driving north on Route 29 in Trenton, when a car, heading in the wrong direction, hit his car.

Deleon was pronounced dead at the scene. His four-year-old daughter was flown to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, while his seven-year-old son is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Capitol Health in Trenton.

Deleon’s family said he was driving his children home from a baby shower. They described Deleon as a hard-working man, who lived to provide for his family.

The driver of the other car, identified as 27-year-old Manuel Vazquez Gutirrez, was under the influence at the time of the accident, according to authorities. He faces multiple charges, including death by auto, DUI, driving without a license and aggravated assault. He was treated for an arm injury.

Route 29 was shut down while officials investigated the accident.
