Weekend Box Office: 'Fast & Furious 6' Leaves Competition In The Dust

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Things weren't as fast or furious at multiplexes as they were over the record-setting Memorial Day Weekend, but the box office remained active.

The sequel "Fast & Furious 6," with Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, made it two weekends in a row in the top spot, earning an estimated $35-million on its second weekend of release.

New films took second and third place.

"Now You See Me," the illusionist crime thriller with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrrelson, and Morgan Freeman, was the runner up, taking in $28-million.

And "After Earth," the science fiction thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan, starring Will Smith and son Jaden, was right behind, claiming the third spot with a debut of $27-million.

Meanwhile, three other holdover titles topped the $10-million mark: "Star Trek Into Darkness," "Epic" and "The Hangover Part III."

Overall, box office was strong, with industry-wide totals easily topping those of a year ago.
