Local Non-Profit To Name 'Best Storyteller In Philadelphia'

By Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A local non-profit will hold a unique competition where the winner gets the title "Best Storyteller in Philadelphia."

"We believe that everyone has a story to tell," says Karina Kacala, marketing manager for First Person Arts.

The group provides a platform for artists, as well as ordinary people to tell stories from their life, but there's a twist.

Folks get five minutes to tell a story tied to a specific theme, letting judges decide on who's the best storyteller in town.

"It so powerful to see how people get on stage and they're a stranger to the audience, but then they tell their story and suddenly, they have a room full of friends," says Kacala. "And they've connected with people either through the humor of their story or the raw emotion that they've projected on stage."

The group will hold its annual Grand Slam competition on May 31st where winners from the past year go head to head. For more information, visit: www.firstpersonarts.org.
