DELANCO, N.J. (CBS) — Authorities in Burlington County confirm a Delanco police officer was shot in the leg early Tuesday morning while responding to a call about a disorderly person.

The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. in the 400 block of Delaware Avenue in Delanco, New Jersey.

Police say Patrolman Francisco Ambrifi arrived on scene and found a man behaving in a disorderly fashion. The man failed to comply with the officer’s orders and a struggle ensued. Authorities say during the struggle, Patrolman Ambrifi discharged his weapon, striking the man more than once. Officer Ambrifi also sustained a gunshot wound to his left knee during the struggle.

Ambrifi was taken to Lourdes Medical Center and moved to Cooper Hospital in Camden where he is listed in stable condition.

Pete Alfinito, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge, Lodge 2, says Ambrifi is expected to fully recover.

The 21-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released because he has not yet been charged, is listed in critical but stable condition.

This investigation in ongoing.
