New Jersey Gun Buybacks Net More Than 10,000 Weapons

TOTOWA, N.J. (AP) — State officials say they have now collected more than 10,000 firearms through gun buyback programs staged throughout New Jersey in recent months.

The most recent event was staged in Passaic County last weekend, where 853 weapons were collected.

Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced the results Wednesday at a news conference in Totowa, noting that 384 handguns and 53 guns that are illegal to own were among the firearms collected in the county. He said about $112,350 in state and county criminal forfeiture funds were used to buy back the weapons.

The firearms obtained through the Passaic County buyback event brought to 10,006 the number of guns taken in overall through six state-led buybacks.
