Basketball-Builds-Bridges Throughout Philadelphia

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  --  A Philadelphia basketball program takes a shot at keeping kids off the streets and in the gym.

At Basketball-Builds-Bridges Bryan Smith and his coaching staff use basketball to teach kids how to be productive members of their community, by drawing different basketball situations out of real life situations.

He says basketball is what keeps the youngsters coming back, but it's not what's at the heart of their mission.

"They learn discipline, self respect and they learn how to respect their environment as well." Smith says.

On Saturdays more than 150 kids ages 2 to 17 pack into the Athletic Recreation Center in North Philadelphia to practice and play games.

Every kid has something different they like most about this program.

"I like the team work and playing with other team mates" One child says.

Another one says, "learning the game of basketball"  is what he likes best.

Smith says the program to learn and use...on and off the court.
