PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The area is bracing for a blast of winter weather. Some residents south and west of the city will see four to eight inches of snow, but two to four inches is expected to fall on most of the region.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews are out on the roadways this morning. Tree removal experts are part of the snow removal plan should they be needed.
PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum says crews began spraying brine solution on expressways and major highways Tuesday morning.
“It’s a proactive step, in a prefatory nature to put the salt brine on the dry asphalt or concrete pavement so the snow won’t immediately bond to the pavement.”
He says maintenance yards were also busy as mechanics made sure trucks and equipment were in working order. And because of the strong winds PennDOT placed tree contractors on standby.
“To be ready to respond should we have any issues with fallen trees and or branches.”
He says there is plenty of salt available.
“We have nearly 80,000 tons of salt stockpiled in the region.”
