BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — A.J. Burnett walked in a pair of runs in Philadelphia’s four-run second inning Monday as the Phillies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-0 Monday.
Burnett lasted just 1 1-3 inning of a scheduled three because of a high pitch count. The Pirates’ opening-day starter allowed four runs, four hits and struck out two.
Phillies fifth starter John Lannan and four relievers combined on a one-hitter. Lannan gave up the Pirates’ only hit, a two-out double by Travis Snider in the first, and walked two during three scoreless innings.
Michael Young had two hits and two RBIs for Philadelphia. Ben Revere and Yuniesky Betancourt also had two hits.
Left-hander Wandy Rodriguez, the Pirates’ No. 2 starter, pitched three scoreless innings. He then departed to join the Dominican Republic team for first-round pool play in the World Baseball Classic.
