PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Sticker shock in the form of new property values are due to be mailed out to Philadelphia homeowners in about two weeks.
But council members say they’re frustrated that they have yet to see neighborhood breakdowns of the new values.
Thus far the Nutter Administration has only said publicly that the new assessments total nearly $100 Billion dollars.
City councilman Brian O’Neill represents the 10th district in the far northeast and he, like other council members, has been anxiously awaiting breakdowns of the values by district or neighborhood.
“It’s frustrating. We were told we were going to have this in September. Then we were told that wasn’t going to happen until Christmas. And now it’s a month after that, and the publics supposed to get it in two weeks. We’re just left to sit and wonder like everyone else,” said O’Neill.
Mayor Nutter said that he has seen some preliminary numbers and that sticker shock may not happen.
“In some instances I think a bunch of folks are actually going to be pleasantly surprised. It’s nowhere near as bad as folks may have been anticipating,” Nutter said.
The new assessments will allow council and the mayor to set a new tax rate. Nutter says the goal will be draw the same amount of revenue as this year, though he admits some homeowners will pay more.
This will affect tax bills that are due in 2014.
