If so, doing well in a job interview may be the deciding factor in whether you’re offered employment or not. So to be sure that you put your best foot forward, 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan has advice that every job candidate needs to know.
CareerBuilder recently surveyed about 2600 hiring managers to ask about the worst job interview blunders they’ve ever encountered. Among the stand-outs:
– An interviewee who hugged the president of the company.
– A potential employee who emptied the office candy dish into her purse.
– One candidate called in sick to her current job – during the interview!
– Another asked if he could be paid under the table.
The hiring managers surveyed also gave some serious insight into the most common mistakes interviewees make. Among them:
– Appearing disinterested during the interview. So try to maintain good energy throughout.
– Answering a phone call or a text can be a big turnoff to a potential employer. Try to silence your device before you go in.
– Dressing inappropriately can also make or break an interview.
– So can talking negatively about a current or former employer.
The best way to avoid these pitfalls, CareerBuilder says, is to prepare for the interview ahead of time. Research the company so you have plenty to talk about with the hiring manager and think about the questions that might be asked, so you can answer them effectively.
