PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Alzheimers Association is a temendously valuable resource for families supporting a loved one with the condition and, as we approach the holiday season, they have some recommendations that are very helpful for people who will be having guests for the holiday.
Adjust expectations and discuss holiday celebrations with family and friends to make sure that they understand the situation. Consider simplifying the occasion or asking someone else to host. Prepare guests who have not visited in a while for changes in the person’s behavior and appearance. Involve your loved one with Alzheimers in safe manageable activities. Build on past traditions and memories. Be careful with holiday decorations. Avoid using candies, artificial fruits/vegetables or other edibles as decorations.
This information is quite helpful because it helps anticipate potential issues.
