Seek Treatment For Depression

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Over the years, depression has been described as if someone is pulling a shade over a person's eyes letting no light in.  The sadness can be overwhelming.  Unfortunately many don't seek treatment and they should.

The combination of antidepressant medication plus therapy can be extremely effective.

An area of concern is the thought that certain teens might be at greater risk of suicide if they take antidepressants.  The studies are controversial and there are many reports that this is not the case.

In this particular instance, it's very important that people work closely with their physicians to look at the options. Overall, however, when we look at all these issues, we realize that it's essential that people get proper care and be evaluated appropriately.
