Hurricane Sandy Shelter List

The Red Cross reminds people that the following are items cannot be provided at shelters:

  • Bedding
  • Special needs food and snacks
  • Important documents (medical records, insurance information, deeds/leases, birth certificates, utility bills with address)
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Medications
  • Games, books or toys to occupy children

They also suggest bringing the following if you will be bringing your pet to a shelter:

  • Medical records, vaccination history, and medications
  • Current photographs
  • Veterinarian phone number
  • Documentation of any behavior problems
  • Alternate contact information
  • First aid kit
  • Extra sturdy leashes, collars, or harnesses and muzzle (if necessary) with identification tags
  • A pet carrier for each animal
  • Food and water bowls, litter pan for cats
  • Food and water for at least 7 days, can opener
  • Toys, blanket

Pennsylvania:

Philadelphia: (All open at 4pm Sunday)

  • Samuel Fels High School, 5500 Langdon Street

Montgomery County:

  • Pottstown High School, 750 North Washington St.,  Pottstown 19464 (Opens Sunday 7pm)
  • Cheltenham High School, 500 Rices Mill Road, Wyncote 19095 (Opens Sunday 7pm)
  • Norristown High School, 1900 Eagle Dr., Norristown 19403 (Opens Sunday 7pm)

Chester County:

Medical Needs Shelter (Pet Friendly) -- Restricted to those who need continuous supervised medical care

  • St. Augustine Preparatory High School, 611 Cedar Avenue, Richland

Cape May County:

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management announced that shelters will be open starting Sunday, October 28th for residents evacuating from the Barrier Islands and Bayside communities in Cape May County. However, before going to a shelter residents are to call their local Office of Emergency Management for instructions.

Ocean City, Sea Isle City and Strathmere residents will be directed to the Upper Township Middle School located at 525 Perry Road in the Petersburg section of Upper Township and to the Upper Township Elementary School, 50 Old Tuckahoe Road in Marmora, New Jersey.

Residents in Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Cape May, West Cape May and Cape May Point will be sheltered at the Woodbine Developmental Center located at 1175 DeHirsch Road, Woodbine, New Jersey.

Also, an animal shelter will open in Lower Township at Noon on Sunday, October 28th. The shelter for animals is at 409 Breakwater Road, Tomwar Building in the Cape May County Airport Complex. Please call 609-465-1619 ex 201 for directions. Additionally, animal sheltering trailers will be set up at two other locations in the county.
