PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Pennsylvania Insurance Department is advising people to prepare now for any possible claims that may result from Hurricane Sandy.
Besides taking steps to protect your property, Melissa Fox, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, says the most important thing to do before the storm is to take an inventory of your valuables, and create a visual record.
“Take a picture of your television; take a picture of the serial number. If you still have the receipts perhaps if you don’t want to keep the paper receipt, you can scan it into your smart phone or take a picture of it. The more information you have, the better it will be in the long run through the claims process,” Fox explains.
Keep your insurance policies and other important documents in a secure place.
After the storm, be careful re-entering your home. Have it checked by an electrician first if it’s flooded. Take steps to prevent any further damage to your home but don’t make any permanent repairs until it’s inspected by the adjuster.
Also, take photos of the damage and save all receipts.
