PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former baggage handler at Philadelphia International Airport has been sentenced in a drug smuggling scheme.

The Department of Homeland Security said Brian Wade was sentenced in federal court Tuesday to 36 months of probation and a $1,000 fine.

On Oct. 7, 2010, workers loading a Bermuda-bound plane confronted Wade near the jet, prompting him to flee. That forced transportation security officials to remove more than 100 passengers off US Airways Flight 1070 and then spend hours rescanning everyone’s luggage.

Federal agents soon determined the incident was tied to a drug smuggling operation between Philadelphia and Bermuda.

Wade was arrested and later pleaded guilty to two counts of possession with intent to distribute more than six pounds of marijuana by stowing it on a Bermuda-bound flight.
