RIDLEY PARK, Pa. (CBS) — It was a big day today for the “Iron Pigs” Little League team in Ridley Park (Delaware County). They had a guest coach — someone who could give them unparalleled advice on hitting the ball.
Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman Ryan Howard created quite a sensation today at Leedom Estates Field. Iron Pigs’ rightfielder John Toriello says the team needed the boost.
“We need a little bit of an advantage, really,” Toriello tells KYW Newsradio. “You know, from his experience and from ours, we just need a little bit of help, and that’s all.”
The Iron Pigs are in the Challenger division, for kids with developmental issues. Howard says this gig helps him keep things in perspective.
“These kids show so much heart and wanting to play the game,” he said today. “It’s inspiring to be out here and watch these kids playing and be able to be part of it. It’s awesome.”
Howard was at the game as part of promotion for the Subway fast food chain, which supports Challenger Little League. Toriello said he appreciates it.
“Out on the field, until we get the bat, it’s just helping us in our lives so we can just build our self-awareness.”
