Defense Begins In Former Babysitter's Murder Trial
By Brad Segall
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- The defense opened its case Monday as the trial of a former babysitter accused of murdering the infant she was caring for nearly two decades ago continues in Montgomery County.
Melissa Haskell's mother Debra testified that her daughter called her the day Ryan Baurley died to tell her the child has passed away. Her mom testified that her daughter was hysterical crying telling her I found him and he wasn't breathing.
A lifelong friend of Haskell's also took the stand and told the jury that Haskell came into the bank where she was working that day in August 1992 and described Haskell as being totally distraught with a look on her face like she had just lost a family member. But, on cross examination she admitted she never passed that information along to detectives after Haskell was arrested.
Haskell is charged with third degree murder. The defense contends her ex-husband only came forward with information about the baby's death because they were in a bitter custody battle.
