Former Babysitter's Words May Hurt Her In Murder Trial

By Brad Segall

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - The words of a former babysitter accused of murdering the child she was caring for nearly two decades ago may come back to haunt her as her trial continues in Montgomery County court.

In an hour-long recorded conversation with her ex-husband Michael Leflar wearing a wire, Melissa Haskell repeatedly says she would never put her hand over their son's mouth, so he couldn't breathe like I did to that baby.

Prosecutors say she was referring to Ryan Baurley, the five-month-old Upper Merion boy she was caring for when he died nearly 20 years ago. Most of the conversation deals with Leflar and Haskell working out visitation schedules for their son, but over and over again Leflar says his biggest fear is that she will go back to drugs and hurt their son.

The defense contends Haskell was under duress when she made the statements and says she would have said anything in Leflar's truck that day last year to make sure she didn't lose shared custody of their child. It was Leflar who came forward last year telling police he had information about Baurley's death.
