Some Firms Giving Applicants Job Offers With An Expiration Date

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Hiring has gotten so hot in a narrow range of fields that firms are making almost instant job offers that require almost instant replies.

The trend, noted by Forbes magazine, finds some high-tech firms grabbing top students almost instantly -- here's our offer. You have 24 hours to decide.

These "exploding" job offers are not common, says Megan Panaccio from the Center for Student Professional Developement in Temple's Fox School of Business. Two to three weeks is considered normal decision-making time, and she figures pressure tactics could backfire.

"They do run the risk that the student will accept that job. They'll continue to interview, come across what they consider a better opportunity, and then they'll go back to that first employer and they'll reneg on that offer, which is against what our code of conduct would be."

Panaccio says a lot of business school grads are getting job offers from where they had an internship and even they aren't take it or leave it now.
