PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – For the third time in program history a Temple women’s basketball player has been selected in the WNBA Draft.

Guard Shey Peddy got the good news yesterday that she was taken in the second round (23rd overall selection) by the Chicago Sky.

“It definitely is exciting,” Peddy tells KYW Newsradio.  “It’s a little bit overwhelming. My phone hasn’t stopped buzzing all day and all day yesterday, but I’m very excited for the opportunity.”

Temple head coach Tonya Cardoza thinks Peddy will fit in well with the Sky.

shey peddy2 Temples Peddy Headed To The Windy City“Chicago is a great organization,” said Cardoza. “Pokey Chatman is a great coach and there’s lot of good talent there.  They are looking for guards, they need guards, and this is a great opportunity for Shey.  Pokey is all about work ethic.  She’s a players’ coach but she doesn’t let you get away with anything.  She’s going to bring out the most in Shey.”

The 5’7″ Peddy had a wonderful career at Temple after transferring in from Wright State.  In just two years with the Owls, Peddy scored 1,025 points (she scored 1,876 overall).  This past season she was named both the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year and she says it is those defensive skills that she thinks translate best to the pro game right now.

Listen to KYW’s Matt Leon’s interview with Shey Peddy:

“Of course, you know I can score the ball but I think they’re more surprised at how I can defend other players and I work so hard on both ends of the court.  So I’ve definitely got to maintain my stamina and just keep in shape.  I think my defense will surprise a lot of people.”

Peddy joins a Chicago team that went 14-20 last season.

The only other Temple players selected in the WNBA Draft were Candice Dupree and Kamesha Hairston.  Dupree was picked in 2006 (also by Chicago) while Hairston went to Connecticut in 2007.
