Penn Security Guards To Vote On Joining A Union
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An election at Penn today will determine whether guards who patrol the campus on bicycles become union members.
"Collective bargaining should be heralded as a great thing for humanity."
Guard Joshua Hupp addressed his colleagues at a rally Monday to generate enthusiasm for today's union vote. 91 guards will decide whether to join the Philadelphia Security Officers Union.
The grass-roots labor group is just three years old but it's been successful where some older, larger unions have failed -- organizing guards who've never been represented before. The Penn guards are employed through a contract with Allied Barton.
Allied Barton says, in a statement, it supports its officers right to choose to be represented by a union.
