Bucks County School Creates Crafts To Raise Money For Special Needs Baseball Field

By Kim Glovas

BUCKS COUNTY, Pa. (CBS) -- A Bucks County elementary school is teaming up with another school, all to benefit a special baseball and softball field for the mentally and physically challenged.

Holland Elementary's 5th grade Intensive Learning Skills class has been making bracelets and lanyards for about 18 months. The idea is "for them to feel that they can create all these beautiful things, and then they can work with their peers, they can work with their inclusion peers, and it all ties back to curriculum. We work with time management, we work with pattern creating," says teacher Melanie Kiker.

Last year, Kiker says, the class made more than a thousand dollars, which went toward the Miracle League, a field designed specifically for special needs kids who want to play baseball and softball. Now, Goodnoe Elementary is joining Holland in the effort.

The Miracle League's grand opening is scheduled for April 22nd at Northampton Municipal Park, located at Hatboro and Bristol Roads.
