Wilmington Councilwoman Responds With 'Rights-For-Sperm' Legislation

By David Madden

WILMINGTON, Del. (CBS) -- Wilmington City Council is poised to vote tonight on a resolution urging state and federal officials to accord equal rights to spermatozoa.

The sponsor of the measure, Councilwoman Loretta Walsh, really doesn't want to do that. She says she is trying to make a point.

She is responding to discussions now underway that would have the government declare that a woman's egg is a "person," entitled to human protections.

If that's the case, Walsh says, then a man's sperm should be treated exactly the same way.

"I'm just simply trying to say to men, leave us alone as a sex. Why don't we all leave the things that are between a person and a God alone anyway?"

Walsh is one of two women on a 13-member panel, and one man is joining them in co-sponsoring the resolution.

She hopes to convince at least four other men in the city council to vote yes, to highlight what she calls the "outrage" felt by women nationwide as legislators try to tell them what they can and cannot do with their own bodies.
