Lower Merion Police: Jewelry Thieves May Have Struck Before

By Brad Segall

LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) – Police along the Main Line say the bandits involved in Wednesday’s armed heist of the Bernie Robbins jewelry store in St. David’s may have struck before.

Lower Merion police say there are striking similarities between the Bernie Robbins holdup in Radnor Township and a robbery at Govberg Jewelers in Bala Cynwyd last month. In both cases, police say one man gets buzzed into the store, and then several more rush in, smash the cases and make off with watches and jewelry.

Lower Merion Detective Sergeant John Stillwagon says it all happens very quickly. “Yeah, it was very violent. They went in, they made a lot of noise and basically took everybody off guard and everybody just froze. They committed the robbery and then they were gone.”

Stillwagon says his department is working on a couple of leads. “The next step is to just (you know) continue on everything we have, talk to as many people as we can. We’ll compare notes with the other departments and see where it takes us.”

They are looking at a similar robbery in Delaware. Meanwhile, Bernie Robbins is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

I wondered how 6 men with weapons could enter a jewelry store without raising flags. Now I know. Overwhelm their prey. The Main Line is now a target for criminal. Have car will travel. The automobile is the great equalizer.
