PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The opera Company of Philadelphia performs Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio at the Academy of Music from Feb.17th – 26th. Artistic Director Robert Driver says it’s a story about a woman captured in Turkey in the 1780s, but this production takes place in the 1920s, and it has some extras.

“In the overture, we tell the whole background, so the audience is ready to see the story, and we do it with clips from old movies like ‘Mata Hari.’ And it takes a classic opera and makes it into a fun ‘now’ experience,” Driver explains.

Only it’s still not in English.

“They’re singing in German of course, because it is a German opera…but we have translations over head, and it’s updated,” Driver says.

He also says the cast is both international and amazing. Find out more at www.operaphila.org.
