PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Following the investigation of a Montgomery County man accused of molesting a child he was supposed to be babysitting, KYW’s Hadas Kuznits looked into tips about what you can do to keep your child safe when you bring someone new into your home.
Regina Schaffer, Center Director for the Fun Kids Center on Market Street, recommends that when looking for a babysitter you don’t just randomly hire someone.
“I would always go on recommendations from other families who already have their children with a certain person. I would go to people who are in the field of child care or elementary education, so check out your local college or university and ask them if you can post a flyer for someone who’s in that field.”
She also recommends doing a background check — and asking a lot of questions:
“A lot of things I would suggest is asking about their discipline policy. That kind of stuff isn’t regulated by DPW.”
You can even invite then back for a working interview to see how they interact with your child while you are there.
“Take your time and have them come back to your home, and don’t settle!”
