PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — February 3, 2012 — The greatest competitive eater of all time, the legendary Takeru Kobayashi, will join five time champion Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, recent three time champ Jonathan “Super Squibb” and 23 other eaters at SportsRadio 94WIP’s Wing Bowl 20 at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday, February 3rd at 6 a.m.
The full roster of 26 eaters will compete for $20,000 in cash from Steven Singer Jewelers, a Chevrolet Camaro from Frederick’s Chevy on the Boulevard and additional amazing prizes. WIP’s Wing Bowl 20, one of the most celebrated radio events in Philadelphia, is sold out. However, listeners can follow the action live on SportsRadio 94WIP, streamed live on the Internet at cbsphilly.com/wingbowl as well as through a variety of mobile devices.
Kobayashi was the winner of the famous Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for an unprecedented six years in a row from 2001-2006. Kobayashi’s style of competing and his sculpted physique introduced to North America that competitive eating could truly be considered a sport. Kobayashi is now regarded as one of the leaders in this 21st century sport.
WIP’s Angelo Cataldi, who co-founded Wing Bowl 20 years ago with radio partner Al Morganti, said “The stage is set for our greatest Wing Bowl ever. Never have we had such a spectacular array of contestants, beautiful girls, incredible floats, off-the-wall personalities and a true legend, Takeru Kobayashi, all rolled into one madcap morning of jaw-dropping entertainment. There will never be another event like Wing Bowl 20.”
Proceeds from WIP’s Wing Bowl 20 will benefit a variety of local charities including the Police Athletic League.
Wing Bowl’s 26 contestants have been pre-selected for their ability to complete various challenging eating stunts before they devour chicken wings in the annual competition. All eaters are attempting to eat the most wings for the coveted title of Wing Bowl Champion. They’ll be eating in front of nearly 20,000 fans in attendance plus members of the world-wide media chronicling the event. In addition to the cash and car, the winner takes home a one of a kind Wing Bowl 20 ring designed exclusively by Steven Singer Jewelers at the other corner of 8th and Walnut. PJ Whelihans is the official supplier of wings for WIP Wing Bowl 20, their fifth consecutive year as sponsor and supplier.
The fun will continue throughout the day at WIP’s Official Wing Bowl 20 After-Parties. Michael Barkann and Ike Reese will broadcast live from SugarHouse Casino, 1001 North Delaware Avenue from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. Defending three time champion Jonathan “Super Squibb” and Former Eagle Hollis Thomas will both appear.
