PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Three teens are dead and one more is hospitalized after an ambush-style shooting in the city’s Juniata section late Tuesday evening.

The suspect in the shooting, 30-year-old Axel Barreto, was arrested Wednesday night following an investigation. He was located and placed in custody without incident in a motel in Bensalem.

The shooting happened Tuesday evening in the 1500 block of E. Luzerne Street. Police believe the shooting was the result of an altercation that began on Facebook.

Investigators say seven teenagers were inside a 1997 Toyota Corolla when a suspect opened fire on the car.

“The ’97 Toyota that the victims were in was struck at least six times by gunfire,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

One of the bullets struck the 16-year-old driver in the neck, while three other 14-year-olds in the car were hit by gunfire.

Despite being shot in the neck, the 16-year-old driver was able to drive the car to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

“Two of the 14-year-old victims were pronounced dead at the hospital just before 11 p.m. The third 14-year-old shooting victim is in extremely condition,” Small explained.

The surviving 14-year-old was taken off life support late Wednesday evening and pronounced dead.

The 16-year-old victim remains in stable condition at St. Christopher’s.

Small said at least 10 shots were fired at the teens from a semi-automatic gun.

The shooting remains under investigation.

i realize in most if not all of these homes there is no daddy present but it’s high time these mammies got involved and kept their children home and out of trouble.

  • David J

Why was it necessary to mention that it was a “semi-automatic” gun? That’s one pull of the trigger for each round fired, the same as a revolver. A semi-auto is not a machine gun or sub-machine gun, and doesn’t fire any faster than any other kind of gun. I get so sick of the gun control slant in these articles.

    • Tara

Really David, that’s what you took from this tragedy? Imbecile.

      • jon

        what tragedy?

    • Luis

Because it sounds “snazzier” if the MSM mentions it to be a “semi-automatic” gun. It sounds better than if they said it was a cowboy six-shooter or a pistol. A “semi-automatc” gun conjures up an image of an AK-47 sub-machine gun.

If 7 kids came to my back yard looking to beat up my 3 kids than sometimes street justice is perfectly fine. This should happen more often and teenagers wouldn’t come looking for a fight at someones home. Dad should have left the back door open and than shot everyone of them in the head as they entered his home. This would be a castle doc use. The victims got what they came for, they are NOT angels, not good kids, all bad seeds looking to beat down 3 teens at their place of sleep.

THEY GOT WHAT CAME TO THEM.

  • Solo Bro

My condolences to all families affected by this tragedy. There’s a lot to learn from this incident. 1. no grown man should ever have to use a gun on kids. Too often we think that talking is a cowards way out when you can just easily shoot someone. Not that fighting solves anything either, but what happened to a “fair one” to resolve issues? 2. Why are 13-14yrs out at 10.30p on a school night? Parents have to do a better job monitoring their kids. I am not blaming the parents for what happened….but you have to monitor your kids at all times.

    • Lazybum

From the sound of Jimbo G’s statement it sounds like the 7 “little kids” in a car were not out for ice cream.

The ghetto community is on a suicide mission- they refuse to talk to cops, refuse to cooperate and then complain because the police can’t help them.

If Jimbo is right about the attack on the three kids, then the ghetto attitude is as responsible for this as the shooter. This is what happens when you refuse to “drop a dime” and elect to extract street justice.

Kids??? They were probably six feet tall! They were just legal minors for the purpose of signing contracts. But kids they weren’t. I you go to someones home to do violence, then getting shot is the risk you take. And please don’t say they should’ve talked it out. Those situations are beyond talking. When they piled into a car 7 deep to go to someones house to fight, talking was out the picture. If some teenagers that are as big as me came to my house to fight and it was 7 of them, id shoot them too.

No parents, no guidance, no interest in school, poor choices & the lure of get rich quick in the drug trade = dead or in jail before they’re 16. Blacks / Hispanics have no future following this recipe.

  • Char

OMG….i just saw the posts on here! i am just disgusted that some frakin idiot parents shot these chioldren over some blasts on Facebook! Sad and sooo Ridiculous!!!

    • queen

Char, Where did you go to school? The detention center? Some spelling dummy.

    • Lazybum

Char- it sounds like kids went wild and assaulted other kids 7 kids to 3. Not that murder was the solution, but those kids were as likely to hurt / kill someone if not brought under control. It is a shame that the 7 kids Dad’s were not around to keep them at home.

  • Char

11pm??? What parent lets their kids out after 11pm and a school night??….totally preventable tragedy!!!! Parents need to know their kids friends and KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS ARE!!! So sad! :(

  • PhillyRN

Apparently there was a fight in school, then threats on Facebook, then the kids come to the kids house who they were fighting. Then the dad opens fire. That is the lastest.

  • PhillyRN

Mel the shooter was one of the parents.

  • Mel

The thing is what are these young teens doing out this late on a school night? Where are the parents?

    More cowards hiding behind guns!

    • laffin’atcha

Bill, only an idiot would make a statement like that. You had 7 thug wannabes piled in a Toyota, probably looking like clowns in a circus when they came piling out, looking for a fight. The man defended himself, just as you would have if you were in the same situation.

      • Lazybum

Laffin @ Bill- ” looking like clowns in a circus when they came piling out”. What an accurate description!

The man was probably defending his family. It is a shame that the 7 kids Dad’s let them out of the house!
