Philadelphia (CBS) – I’ve been writing medical reports for about 25 years and for about 25 years I’ve been talking about hangover remedies on New Year’s Day.

I always say use common sense, don’t drink too much alcohol and you won’t be in the situation where you’ll have to deal with a hangover. Some people learn, some people don’t and of course there’s always new people learning for the first time.

So what can you do if you do drink too much alcohol? One of the best things is to get some rest. That is key. In addition, you should replenish your body with fruit juice, with water. Get those fluids in because you lose a lot of fluid when you drink alcohol.

Avoid caffeine; you may think that is a good idea but that also dehydrates you. Finally, get vitamin c and drink a sports drink, perhaps Gatorade, Powerade, something like that. It will help replenish your vitamins and nutrients.
