Peanut Chews Maker Hopes To Cash In On Philly Pride

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A longtime Philadelphia candy-maker is going back to its roots, hoping to cash in on hometown pride.

Tastycakes, soft pretzels, and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews. At least that's what makers of the candy Peanut Chews hope to see.

"The goal, really, is to emphasize to Philadelphia how proud we are to be Philly born and raised."

Gayl Downs, head of Peanut Chews at the plant in Northeast Philadelphia says they're rolling out the new ad campaign promoting the hometown angle starting with a sponsorship at the Mummers Parade.

"The Goldenberg family has manufactured candy here since the late 1800's, in 1917, the peanut chew was actually sold and used as a war ration for our troops during World War I."

And, she says, the wrapper of the candy also has a hometown theme, not only going back to the traditional red and brown that most of us grew up with, but the UPC symbol is in the shape of the Philadelphia skyline with the Liberty Bell.
