Abu-Jamal: I'm Off Death Row; Surprised By DA Move

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Former death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal says he is surprised and somewhat disappointed that he will not get a new sentencing hearing.

The convicted cop-killer also says he has a new cell off death row in the western Pennsylvania prison where he is incarcerated.

Abu-Jamal made the remarks Friday in a call to supporters gathered at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Excerpts were posted Monday on prisonradio.org.

The former Black Panther had been on death row for nearly 30 years for the murder of white Philadelphia police Officer Daniel Faulkner. He has earned worldwide support for his claims that he is the victim of a racist justice system.

A court threw out Abu-Jamal's death sentence because of flawed jury instructions. Philadelphia prosecutors agreed last week to a life term.
