Bicyclist Killed In Violent Kensington Crash

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An out of control driver hit and killed a bicyclist.

Eyewitnesses say the driver also slammed into four parked cars as well as another oncoming car.

It happened Friday evening in the 1900 block of East Lehigh Avenue in Kensington.

"He could be somebody's dad not coming home tonight," Nicole Gerner said.

Gerner, a certified medical assistant, cried for a man she did not know but tried to help.

"He was in the bicycle lane in between my car and my neighbor's car. He got thrown over top of my car and he landed right in front of the pavement," Gerner explained.

According to eyewitnesses, the mangled bike pieces are all that remain after the bicyclist was rushed to the hospital where police say he later died.

Gerner added, "I've just never had someone die in front of my face, especially when you have no power to help them. "

Eyewitnesses say the driver, who hit the bicyclist, first hit four parked cars then continued to speed down the 1900 block of East Lehigh Avenue. The driver hit another oncoming car and neighbors say the driver then tried to run away but a passerby tackled and held him down until police arrived.

"The cops have been up here trying to find out what happened but they do have the person, thank God," Gerner said.

As of Friday night, police said they could not release any names but did confirm the driver was arrested on numerous charges including DUI, Aggravated Assault and Homicide by Vehicle.
