Giroux Leads Flyers To 5-3 Win Over Hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Claude Giroux took less than a minute and a half to get his first goal and proceeded to have his most productive game this season.

Giroux finished with two goals and an assist, leading the surging Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

"It's only one game," said Giroux, who has 11 goals and 11 assists after his first multigoal game of the season. "The other lines brought a lot of energy and got the team going. It was obviously a team effort tonight."

Matt Read added a goal and an assist, and Maxime Talbot and Wayne Simmonds scored the other goals for Philadelphia, which got three assists from Chris Pronger.

Jaromir Jagr added two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 17 shots as the Flyers improved to 6-1-1 on the road.

"I really think it starts with good leadership," said Philadelphia coach Peter Laviolette, who coached Carolina to the Stanley Cup title in 2006. "I think our leadership has been excellent, and from there it comes down to competitiveness. We've got a good group in there that really works hard."

Patrick Dwyer scored his first two goals of the season for Carolina, one short-handed and another on a penalty shot. Tuomo Ruutu also scored for Carolina.

Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward had 13 saves on 17 shots before being pulled for Brian Boucher.

"Our first period, believe it or not, has been our sink all year," Carolina coach Paul Maurice said. "It's something to do with too much room or too much respect for the other team's offense. We give them too much room and their offense looks great."

The Flyers, who have points in seven straight games (5-0-2), are 17-1-3 in their last 21 games against Carolina.

Giroux gave Philadelphia the lead on a rush 79 seconds into the game, taking a lead pass from Jagr and beating Ward glove side.

Talbot made it 2-0 at 8:50, as Read tipped him the puck in the low slot from behind the goal.

Dwyer cut the lead in half with a short-handed goal — the first the Flyers have allowed this season — at 19:59 of the period, as Eric Staal fed him on the rush.

Giroux scored his second of the game on a rush at 2:45 of the second, beating Ward over his left shoulder from the left circle with Jagr getting an assist.

Philadelphia made it 4-1 on a power play at 6:58, as Simmonds deflected Giroux's shot from the left circle between Ward's pads to end the goalie's night.

Ruutu scored later in the second and Dwyer connected on his penalty shot at 4:36 of the third, but Read got the clincher on a rush at 16:09.
