GOP Ticket Dissects Loss In Montgomery County Commissioners’ Race

BLUE BELL, Pa. (CBS) — Why did the GOP lose control of Montgomery County government for the first time in more than a century?

Following Tuesday’s election (see related story), Republican candidate (and incumbent commissioner) Bruce Castor offered some explanations.

From a political perspective, Castor says, it’s simple: the Democrats won the election because they had more money and more voters.   He says they started with a million dollars in the bank and raised another $1.4 million, and that made it hard for the GOP to convince donors to pony up cash for the Castor-Brown ticket.

But Castor, who will now be the minority commissioner, says he’s looking forward to working with Democrats Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards.

“I believe them when they say that they’re going to keep taxes from going up,” he told reporters today.  “I believe them when they say they’re going to trim government spending.  It’s going to be part of my job as an elected commissioner to do my best to help them keep those promises.”

And Castor, who was often shut out of decision-making during his first term by an alliance of the other two commissioners, believes the relationship among the commissioners will improve dramatically now.

Jenny Brown called her first run at countywide office a “tremendous learning and growing experience.”

I am GLAD that Bruce came in 3rd and wished he had lost except that I wouldn’t want another obstructionist tea party person like Jenny in the commissioner’s office. Just want to know if Bruce will stop having temper tantrums and stop wasting taxpayers’ money and get some work done. He let one criminal off with a slap on the wrist who was caught with millions of dollars buried in their back yard. What does it take for Repubs to stop their lock-step march to oblivion? I guess this loss is a step in the right direction. Maybe Bruce will pay attention? NOT!

Mr. Castor’s “excuses” for coming in third (the Dems had more money and more voters) may be among the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. More money simply would have given him the resources to air more commercials (that people dismiss), send out more mailings (that people immediately trash), and stick more signs on the side of the road (that are little more than UGLY). As for blaming his failure on the Dems having “more voters”…..duh. It’s not how many voters a side has….it’s how many actually vote….and the Republican party FAILED to bring out enough “my party right or wrong” voters to insure victory. Here’s why the Republicans lost…..Shapiro / Richards received more votes. It’s that simple…it’s that simple. Now as to why they received more votes….look at the last four years…and you won’t have to ask anything else.

Hey Tom, you lost because your partner in crime is a liar. I asked her where her money came from and she and her stoner campaign manager lied to me. She told me to look it up so I did…I guess your buddy van gurian couldn’t buy you the election like he said he was going to. Ha ha!
It’s just a shame you got to keep your job even though so many people voted against you.
I hope they continue to shut you out because you shouldn’t be there. Hopefully we can change the way county politics works before the next wlection and get rid of you completely.
