PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It’s not even Halloween, but a local family run candy company around since the 1940s is preparing for Christmas.
They’re making hand crafted candy canes at Giambri’s Quality Sweets in Clementon, N.J. (Camden County), and there are twists to the traditional peppermint flavor like cherry, lemon and pomegranate.
Dave Giambri was making a batch of candy canes that started off with 55 pounds of sugar, corn syrup, and water and heated to 335 degrees.
“Then it’s poured onto cooling table which we start the cooling process. Where it’s kneaded, we add the coloring and flavor.”
The 50 pound glob is pulled stretched, twisted, cut, and hooked to make the cane. It is then wrapped and boxed to be sold in the store or shipped out.
Giambri’s is holding a contest for this year’s new flavor. You can cast your ballot at www.giambriscandy.com.
Orange creme is in the lead.
