Health: Newest Technology To Melt Fat

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The newest technology to melt fat. 3 On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl has more on the FDA approved device.

Jessica DiPalo has always been in great shape, but after giving birth to twins, she couldn't get rid of her tummy.

"It made me uncomfortable and very self conscious and very frustrating for someone who runs and is otherwise very healthy and health conscious," said Jessica. So she decided to go for a new procedure called SlimLipo. Doctors say the laser not only melts fat.

"In the process we're tightening the skin," said Dr. Mitchell Chasen, a Cosmetic Surgeon.

The maker says the laser uses dual wave length energy to break down fat cells. Once melted, it's easier to suction out, that makes it less invasive. Patients are awake during the procedure.

Dr. Chasen says the recovery is quicker and less painful than regular liposuction.

"We're able to stand the patient up, we're able to turn them and that really helps us to get the result we want," said Dr. Chasen.

"I actually got up during the procedure and could see already when I looked down that so much of it was gone," said Jessica.

SlimLipo isn't for people who are very overweight. It's designed for people like Jessica who want moderate and targeted spot reductions.

"I like to still wear a two piece in the summer time, and I'm much more comfortable doing that," said Jessica. And she says it gave her back the body she had before babies.

SlimLipo can be expensive, costing up to $6,000 for one treatment. It can also burn the skin and cause some bruising.
